Prime Minister Najib to Introduce New Tax

November 30, 2013

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak made it clear that to avoid paying taxes is a treasonous act that deters a country’s development. Instead, he insists that to pay your taxes is a patriotic act which allows increased government and infrastructural growth. In an attempt to justify the implementation of a goods and services tax, Najib suggested that managing taxes responsibly and paying them on time is to the benefit of the nation.

“Because if we pay our taxes, it also means that we are doing our part to help (in developing) the country,” said Najib in his speech at the National Economic Empowerment seminar today. “The definition of patriotism in our country is that we must discharge our responsibility to the country for the good of the people and the nation. When we pay tax, we are helping the people. We instil this spirit, with this our country will be more successful.”

Najib hopes to have the tax implemented by April 1, 2015, because, according to him, it is for the good of the people.

“The other option is to take loans, but if we continue to borrow, what will happen, (if) we cannot pay, the country’s rating will drop, we will be bankrupt, the people will suffer, we cannot manage the country like this,” he added.

“The benefit is that we will have a stronger source of revenue to accelerate the country’s development and the people will be happier because it is based on resources that will make the progress further,” he added.
